To Thine Own Self Be True…
In Act 1, Scene 3 of Hamlet (Shakespeare if you really have to ask), Polonius doles out some of the best advice going. With gems of wisdom like “neither a borrower nor a lender be,” “clothes make the man” and “old friends are the best friends,” there’s something for everyone in there and probably more than in many lightweight self-help books. But it was the equally famous “To thine own self be true” line that sprang to mind today when I chanced upon a marketing video…
This video was trendy, with it and funny. It was engaging, clever and witty. It had everything that a marketing video requires to go viral… apart from the fact that when I clicked through to the site that had released it the site looked old hat, the videos were staid (I could say boring if I was feeling less charitable) and they just did not mesh together.
The type of people who would be intrigued by the marketing video would not be impressed by the staid onsite look and feel. And the type of people who would like the staid, traditional, onsite look and feel would have been turned off by the marketing video.
As lectured to Laertes by Polonius…
This above all: to thine own self be true,
And it must follow, as the night the day,
Thou canst not then be false to any man.
Farewell, my blessing season this in thee!
Most humbly do I take my leave, my lord.
Make sure that your sales and marketing efforts are in alignment with your brand identity. Just because something is trendy doesn’t make it right for you. Nor does it make it right for your brand. It doesn’t impress anybody… least of all your customers.
